Five-time Toyo Tires MSA British Rallycross Champion Julian Godfrey will race the Spencer Sport Mitsubishi Mirage RX Supercar at the opening round of this year’s series at Silverstone this Saturday (March 17).
Having moved into the Supercar category in 2011, the Heathfield-based driver won the British Rallycross title five times in a row (2011-2015). He then finished third in 2016 and second last year, only narrowly missing out on the title after retiring with damage on the final round, despite scoring the most number of race wins during the season (four from nine rounds). Prior to Supercars, Godfrey won titles in the MSA Supernational Rallycross Championship and in the production-based Stock Hatch Rallycross Championship.
Godfrey knows the mechanics of the powerful Mitsubishi Mirage RX Supercar well, as his own Julian Godfrey Engineering company supplies the four-cylinder, 16 value, transverse 1620cc turbocharged engine. He tested the Spencer Sport/Mpart AB developed four-wheel drive Mirage RX Supercar last week at a very wet Pembrey, completing around 25 trouble-free laps of the west Wales rallycross track.
“We had a very good test at Pembrey, although the wet weather wasn’t exactly ideal,” said Godfrey. “The Mitsubishi Mirage RX Supercar has a lot of power and it handles very well, and we used the test to experiment with damper, springs and anti-roll bar settings. With found some more traction by making the car a bit softer – I prefer my car’s set-up to be quite soft, and even if it’s dry at Silverstone this weekend, I think the set-up we have will work well.”
“We’re delighted to take our latest spec Mitsubishi Mirage RX Supercar to the opening round of the 2018 MSA British Rallycross Championship at Silverstone this weekend, and to showcase the car on such a big stage,” says Spencer Sport Team Manager Charlie Jukes. “Julian knows the technical aspects of the car well, and he had a very good test at our local British rallycross track down at Pembrey, covering around twenty-five laps in extremely wet conditions.”
The Spencer Sport team would to thank its Rallycross partners for their support: Spencer ECA, Oil4Wales, Motul, Ryley Wealth Management, Alcon brakes and discs, Speedline Corse wheels, Sea & Slate holiday cottages and Toyo Tires.
